Preview for Dallas Cowboys @ Carolina Panthers

The Dallas Cowboys head to Charlotte to face the Carolina Panthers amid a warning from one of their former teammates following his outstanding Week 5 performance.

Dallas improved to 2-2-1 with a rout of the New York Jets last week, and are favourites on the road against Carolina.

But they are facing a Panthers team who are coming off the high of a comeback win over the Miami Dolphins, Carolina recovering from a 17-0 deficit to record their second win of the campaign.

Carolina’s effort was keyed by a career day for former Cowboys running back Rico Dowdle.

Dowdle gashed the Dolphins for 206 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, averaging a gaudy nine yards per rush.

And he had a message for his ex-teammates ahead of the visit of the Cowboys.

Dowdle may play a more complementary role on Sunday, with starting running back Chuba Hubbard set to return from a calf injury.

But he said of facing his old team, ranked 32nd in the NFL on defense: “They’ve got to buckle up.

“That was just meaning it’s going to be a very physical game. I take pride in that. Buckle your chinstraps up. I will be coming.”

Asked about Dowdle’s comments, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said: “I know we’re going to have to buckle up.

“We’ll bring our seatbelts, Rico. We’ll buckle up. Can’t wait to see him though.”

Seatbelts could be considered a wise accompaniment for Cowboys games in what has been a rollercoaster campaign.

While they have been porous on defense, the Cowboys have scored at least 37 points in three of their last four games, with quarterback Dak Prescott and the passing game operating at an extremely high level.

Carolina’s defense figures to offer more resistance than that of the Jets, though, with just five sacks to their name and the lowest pressure rate in the league, the Panthers are unlikely to pose Prescott the kind of problems with their pass rush that will get him out of rhythm.

As such, it appears likely this one will develop into a shootout and, for all the merits of the Carolina run game, the clear edge in a quarterback duel between Bryce Young and Prescott goes to the Cowboys star.

Prediction for Dallas Cowboys @ Carolina Panthers

Look for this one to be a thoroughly entertaining game that ends with the Cowboys celebrating a victory that will further their case as a playoff threat in the NFC.

Prediction: Dallas Cowboys 34 – 28 Carolina Panthers
