The Ombudsman has requested a detailed report on the measures taken since the sending of the first letter of formal notice in Rome, the first step of the infringement procedure opened in 2013.
Brussels (ANSA) – The European Ombudsman – the body that investigates maladministration by EU institutions – has launched an investigation into the EU Commission for its alleged inaction towards Italy regarding the former Ilva case, despite the infringement procedure opened in 2013 for violations of EU rules on industrial emissions and the environment.
The decision came following a complaint filed by M5S MEP Valentina Palmisano. In a letter to the Commission President Ursula von der Leyenthe Ombudsman requested, by September 30, a detailed account of the measures taken since the first letter of formal notice was sent to Rome, the first step in the sanctioning process.
For the purposes of the investigation, the team appointed by the Ombudsman, Teresa Anjinhowill have to examine the entire file related to the infringement procedure by the same date of September 30. The Ombudsman also requested to receive “copies of all correspondence and relevant documents exchanged between the Commission and the Italian authorities, including any materials not officially recorded” (July 17).
