The European Union is ready to train the Ukrainian army in Ukraine after a ceasefire or peace agreement ends the fighting with Russian forces, the head of European diplomacy said on Friday.

Copenhagen – “We have trained more than 80,000 soldiers so far, and we must be ready to do more. This could include the deployment of EU trainers in Ukraine,” said Kaja Kallas to the press after an informal meeting of the Union’s defense ministers in Copenhagen.

Kaja Kallas welcomed the “broad support” among the 27 for this extension of the current mandate of the military mission in Ukraine. All EU countries are in favor of it, except for Hungary, which she did not mention.

The Europeans are working on security guarantees to provide to Ukraine after a possible cessation of hostilities, and the EU plans to contribute to this, particularly by strengthening its mission to train Ukrainian military personnel.

The United States, long hesitant, promised in August to contribute, but without sending American troops to Ukrainian soil. They also emphasized the need for Europeans to provide the bulk of these security guarantees for Kiev. (August 29, 2025)
