Bratislava – The EU emissions trading system known as ETS2 should be abolished. Because the decarbonization of the European Union is an unrealistic goal. This was stated by the Minister of Agriculture of the Slovak Republic Richard Takáč (Smer-SD) during the Sunday discussion program TA3 In Politics. Opposition MP of the National Council of the Slovak Republic Tamara Stohlová (PS) reminded the minister in the same program that the government of the Slovak Republic has the Social-Climate Fund in its hands and can help households affected negatively by ETS2, TASR reports.
“It’s nice, but globally the European Union does not operate on a separate globe, somewhere else, it is part of the world as such,” said Richard Takac referring to the EU’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, stating that Europe will not move the climate crisis if China and the USA do not join. He warned that the EU cannot lose competitiveness against other regions at the same time.
Tamara Stohlová criticized the politicians of the ruling coalition for scaring citizens with high energy and transportation costs in the event of the introduction of the ETS2 system. She emphasized that the Social-Climate Fund is available, which is overseen by Deputy Prime Minister Peter Kmec (Hlas-SD), but within that, the Minister of the Environment Tomas Taraba (nominated by SNS) has the task of utilizing it and bringing appropriate legislation.
“The fund has approximately 1.5 billion euros, which Slovakia does not count in its finances and can use for example for compensations for households,” the opposition MP stated. (November 2)
