Brussels – Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Dove said ahead of Thursday’s EU leaders’ summit in Brussels that it is high time for Europe to realize its vulnerability if it does not build a sufficiently strong economic base and competitiveness. “We never know what tomorrow will bring,” he warned before the meeting, which focused on relations between the EU and the US, which have become strained because of Greenland.

“This is where everything begins and in the end it is up to us ourselves to decide our own fate. We can also leave it to others, but I hope we don’t,” Golob said regarding the latest developments in relations between the EU and the US.

Golob attributed the message from Wednesday’s meeting between US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos—that they had formed a framework for an agreement on the future of Greenland and the entire Arctic region, followed by Trump’s withdrawal of the tariff threat—to Europe’s resolute response.

“But we never know what tomorrow will bring. So cautious optimism is appropriate, while at the same time a clear awareness that we live in truly uncertain times and that every step can be problematic if we do not think it through in advance,” he said.

In his opinion, the US is still a reliable partner for Europe, as it is necessary to distinguish between day-to-day events and the solid alliance lasting several decades, which has already stood the test of time on several occasions in the past. Despite the latest developments, relations have not yet passed the point of no return, the prime minister further assessed. (22 January)
