As Gameweek 9 approaches, this is the moment to sharpen your squad and get ahead of the curve, writes Fantasy Premier League expert Blake Hurst. A mix of injuries, fixture swings, and emerging form has opened the door for some clever transfers – from dependable assets to exciting differentials. Whether you’re chasing green arrows or rebuilding after a poor week, these five names are well worth considering for your next move!

    Michael Keane (4.5m)

Michael Keane could turn out to be a clever under the radar differential pick for Gameweek 9 and beyond. With Jarrad Branthwaite set for surgery following a setback in his recovery from a hamstring problem, Keane now looks nailed on for minutes in the Everton backline. Priced at a tidy 4.5m and sitting at 0.9% ownership, he’s a true differential for managers chasing rank. Keane’s threat from set-pieces adds real upside, especially with Everton ranking third in expected goals from such situations. Combine that with his average of 9.99 defensive actions per 90, and there’s a strong case for giving him a differential spot in your squad.

    Reece James (5.4m)

When Reece James is fit, he’s a different level of FPL asset. Few defenders can match his ceiling other than the likes of Trent Alexander Arnold when he was in the Premier League. Chelsea’s defensive structure has tightened, and James’ physicality makes him a defender with defensive contribution potential with serious attacking upside. His delivery from wide positions remains exceptional, and his ball striking is among the best for a right back. With one goal and three assists in his last four matches – playing the full 90 in each – James is clearly fit and firmly re-enters the conversation as one of the top defensive picks at only 5.5% owned heading into the attractive upcoming fixtures.

    Enzo Fernández (6.7m)

With Cole Palmer sidelined, Enzo Fernández has stepped into a more advanced number 10 role – and it’s showing. His creativity is thriving, particularly with João Pedro’s movement opening up passing lanes and shooting opportunities. Fernandez’s delivery from set-pieces adds another layer of appeal, and he now looks the most likely candidate to take penalty duties while Palmer remains out. Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures look promising, and with consistent minutes in an attacking position, the Argentina international could quietly become a strong short-term differential for FPL managers seeking mid-priced midfield value.

    Bryan Mbeumo (8.0m)

Bryan Mbeumo remains one of the sneaky strong picks this season. He currently ranks second among midfielders for non-penalty expected goal involvements with 4.13, showcasing his attacking threat. With no European fixtures to distract him, Mbeumo can fully focus on Premier League action. His confidence should be boosted after Manchester United’s recent victory against Liverpool. Looking ahead, United enjoy a favourable run of fixtures, making Mbeumo a tempting differential option. At just 14% ownership, he’s a smart, low risk punt to consider for Gameweek 9 and beyond.

    Nick Woltemande (7.3m)

Nick Woltemade has been my standout FPL pick since his Premier League debut in Gameweek 4, when he was owned by just 0.7%. Now with ownership at 17.4% and climbing, he’s impressing with consistent returns, scoring in every game except one since joining Newcastle United. His growing confidence and quality make him a reliable forward option. Newcastle’s upcoming fixtures are solid, including matches against Fulham (without key defender Joachim Anderson), West Ham and Brentford. Given his influence and form, Woltemade looks set to be a strong attacking asset with the potential to take on full-time penalty duties.
