Leeds and Newcastle shared the spoils in a tight, largely uneventful Premier League clash at Elland Road, with neither side able to break the deadlock in a goalless draw.

The first half was cagey and low on chances. Leeds looked to assert themselves early through the pace of Giacomo Gnonto and James, both of whom provided threat on the flanks.

Despite these efforts, Newcastle’s defensive structure limited the home side to speculative attempts from distance, the most notable being Stach, whose long-range effort narrowly missed the target.

Newcastle’s best chance of the opening 45 minutes came from Osula, whose strike around the quarter-hour mark was brilliantly blocked by Gudmundsson on the line, keeping the score level.

Livramento and Murphy delivered crosses into dangerous areas, but the visitors struggled to find a finishing touch, leaving Leeds’ goalkeeper Pope largely untested.

    Second-half stalemate

The second half followed a similar pattern, with few clear chances and both teams largely cancelling each other out.

Leeds looked to exploit the pace of Calvert-Lewin, who was set up by Harrison late in the match. In the 75th minute, Harrison delivered a beautifully weighted pass over the Newcastle defence, leaving Calvert-Lewin one-on-one with Pope.

The striker’s first touch, however, was too heavy, allowing the goalkeeper to intervene and preserve the stalemate. Just before the final whistle, Bogle again found Calvert-Lewin in space, but Pope reacted quickly to make a crucial near-post save, ensuring that the score remained 0-0.

Newcastle, meanwhile, showed flashes of promise through their wide players and set-piece opportunities. While Howe was missing key forwards, the bench options of Barnes and Elanga offered pace and potential late-game threats.

The Magpies created little in the way of tangible chances, with Osula’s blocked effort remaining their most significant attacking moment. Farke’s team continued to push, winning potentially dangerous set-pieces, but the lack of a clinical edge in front of goal meant that these opportunities came to nothing.

The draw leaves Leeds United in 10th place, ahead of their next fixture against Fulham on September 13, while Newcastle remain 15th and will have to wait until after the international break to chase their first win of the season when they host Wolves.
