Brussels – Sweden, together with 24 other countries and the EU, has signed a joint statement calling for an end to the war in Gaza. The statement has been signed by the foreign ministers of the countries.

“We come together with a simple, urgent message: The war in Gaza must end now. The civilian suffering has reached a new low,” the statement reads.

Countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Denmark demand that Israel lift its restrictions on aid shipments and immediately allow the UN and humanitarian organizations to operate in Gaza. They also condemn “the inhumane killing of civilians, including children.”

“We also demand an end to the Israeli government’s illegal settlement expansion and settlers’ violence against civilians,” writes Sweden’s Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard in a comment to TT.

Last week, the foreign ministers of EU countries discussed an agreement for more urgent aid to Gaza, but joint EU measures – such as pausing or completely terminating the EU’s economic-political cooperation agreement with the country – are currently far off.

“I do not assess that it is realistic at all to believe that there could be unanimity behind such a decision, and I also think it is important to maintain forms of dialogue with Israel,” said Maria Malmer Stenergard to TT at that time.
