I believe a lot in the team

Graham Potter still believes in his West Ham players despite their disappointing start to the Premier League season.

The Hammers were thrashed 3-0 at newly promoted Sunderland last Saturday after an abject second-half display saw the Wearsiders cruise to victory.

It has been a relatively quiet summer on the transfer front with Potter bringing in Jean-Clair Todibo, El Hadji Malick Diouf and Mads Hermansen but the former Chelsea boss believes there is still enough quality within the group to succeed this season.

“There’s a few more people in the press conference”

It’s not about bringing new players in – Potter

Speaking ahead of tomorrow night’s home game with Chelsea, he said: “We have to get more out of the squad that we have. We also look to improve, we will do that together, as a club, we will do that collectively and try to find the best solution.

“It’s great when you’ve had a bad result, everyone thinks the silver bullet will come from outside and save us all. History would suggest it doesn’t work like that.

“It’s about being a team and accepting the criticism when a bad result comes but to get on with your work and accept responsibility.”

‘It’s up to us to react’

The opening-day defeat was a sobering setback for West Ham and Potter is aware the pressure will increase if there are many more.

He added: “It’s a disappointing result, there’s no getting away from that. It’s a bad result for us.

“I believe a lot in the players, believe a lot in the team, I believe a lot in the club and my job is to support them and to push and to improve.

“It’s the Premier League, we can’t turn up anywhere and think we are going to get three points. We know we need to do more, to improve our performance. The players were gutted after the game.

“It’s up to us to react and perform.”

The one positive for Potter ahead of the Chelsea clash is the lack of injuries within his squad.

“Everybody’s fine. George Earthy trained with group today. Luis Guilherme went over on his shoulder the week before the game so he is still missing but apart from that everybody is okay,” he said.
