BRUSSELS – The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that the European Union fully supports the mass demonstrations in Iran and condemns what she called the “violent repression” of the participants.

“The streets of Tehran, and cities around the world, are echoing with the footsteps of Iranian women and men demanding freedom. Freedom of speech, assembly, movement and, above all, the freedom to live. Europe fully supports them. We unequivocally condemn the violent suppression of these legitimate demonstrations. Those responsible will be remembered on the wrong side of history,” von der Leyen said on the platform X.

She called for the immediate release of all detained demonstrators, the restoration of internet access and respect for fundamental rights. The American news agency Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) stated earlier today that at least 65 people have been killed and more than 2,300 arrested across Iran in the last 13 days during anti-regime protests in the country. The agency, which advocates for human rights issues in Iran, said that protests have been recorded at 512 locations in 180 cities. (January 10)
