Last year’s Día de los Muertos celebration at the Forest Grove Farmers Market.

Adelante Mujeres, a nonprofit dedicated to providing education and empowerment opportunities to Latine women, is investing in its popular farmers markets with support from an Oregon Cultural Trust grant award

With markets in Forest Grove and Cornelius that attract an average of 2,500 weekly visitors, Adelante Mujeres forges a connection between sustainability and cultural celebration. Marketgoers can shop for fresh, local groceries while enjoying rich artistic offerings, including print artists, clothing designers, ceramicists and live music.

The market recently wrapped for the season with a festive Día de los Muertos celebration. Performances featured the Danza Azteca ensemble Yankuik Ohtli, Forest Grove High School’s resident mariachi band, and regional Mexican tunes curated by DJ Blaze.

Delicia Arellano, who assists with market operations, says the celebration was an annual highlight. “I love that we can create spaces that are welcoming for all, that allow our broader community to enjoy and appreciate Latine culture,” says Arellano.
