Former European Commissioner Thierry Breton will not testify next week before the U.S. Congress during a hearing focused on EU tech rules, titled “The Threat from Europe to Freedom of Expression and Innovation in America.”
Brussels – “I regret to inform you that I will not be able to participate,” states former commissioner Thierry Breton in a letter, a copy of which was obtained by AFP, addressed Thursday to Republican lawmaker Jim Jordan, who heads the House Judiciary Committee.
“As this hearing concerns the policies of the European Union and, more specifically, the Digital Services Act (DSA), the European Commission will respond to you directly,” he adds.
Disinformation, online hate, counterfeits, or dangerous products, the DSA aims to protect European users by imposing obligations on platforms – particularly to report problematic content.
Without mentioning the EU, President Donald Trump attacked on Monday countries regulating the tech sector, threatening them with tariffs and export restrictions.
Jim Jordan had announced as a “confirmed” witness Nigel Farage, leader of the far-right British party Reform UK, and as a “guest” witness Thierry Breton. (August 28, 2025)
