It was a memorable night for the Liverpool defender.

Ibrahima Konate was left lost for words after scoring on his return to the Liverpool side following the death of his father as the Reds came from behind to beat Newcastle United 4-1.

Liverpool moved up to fifth in the Premier League table with an ultimately comfortable win, though they were second-best for much of the first half and fell behind when Anthony Gordon arrowed Newcastle into a 36th-minute lead.

Yet two goals in the space of as many minutes from Hugo Ekitike turned the game on its head before half-time.

Florian Wirtz then made it 3-1, but the biggest cheer of the night at Anfield came when Konate tapped in after Nick Pope had fumbled a late Liverpool corner into his path.

Konate was understandably unable to contain his emotions as he celebrated his goal and, speaking to TNT Sports after the match, he reflected on a night he will surely remember forever.

“For sure I am very happy,” Konate said.

“I don’t have words to describe what I feel right now because it was a very difficult moment for me and my family the last two weeks, but this is part of life. It is hard to accept that and we don’t have the choice.

“I know that the team had some injured players, and the manager on the call said to take my time and I don’t have to rush back.

“With this [injury] situation it was important for me to come back and help the team. I did today with the team at Anfield, the atmosphere was incredible today, and this is what we need until the end of the season.”
