After years of serving as Liverpool’s trusted understudy to Alisson Becker, Caoimhin Kelleher is finally stepping into a starting role – joining Brentford in a deal worth up to £18 million.

The Republic of Ireland international arrives at the Bees for an initial £12.5 million, with a potential £5.5 million in performance-based add-ons. He will replace Mark Flekken, who recently made the switch to Bayer Leverkusen.

“I don’t think it was very difficult for me to leave [Liverpool],” Kelleher said after completing the move. “I felt for my own career that the time was right for me to go, to be a number one and to play every week.”

The move doesn’t just mark a new chapter for Kelleher and Brentford – it’s also a transformative moment for his boyhood club, Ringmahon Rangers.

According to The Sun, when Kelleher signed for Liverpool from Ringmahon at age 16 in 2015, a 20% sell-on clause was included in the deal. That clause now entitles the Munster Senior League side – who play in the third tier of Irish football – to a windfall of around £2.5 million, the largest sell-on fee ever received by an Irish club.

Speaking to The Irish Times, Ringmahon Rangers chairman Paul Higgins said: “It’s going to set us up for long into the future.”

“I’m very happy,” he added. “Very happy for Caoimhín himself, first of all, and his family. We always believed that [Caoimhín] would be a success.”

Now, thanks to one career-defining move, Kelleher has not only secured his own future—but changed the course of his boyhood club’s too.
