The automotive lobby described on Wednesday the sales targets for electric cars in Europe as “unreachable,” just days before the start of negotiations with the European Commission.

Paris – “The rigid targets set for CO2 emissions from cars and vans in 2030 and 2035 are, in today’s world, simply unattainable,” state the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) and the European Association of Automotive Suppliers (Clepa) in a joint letter.

“The current trajectory for reducing CO2 emissions in road transport needs to be recalibrated to meet the EU’s climate goals while also preserving Europe’s industrial competitiveness, social cohesion, and strategic resilience of its supply chains,” believe ACEA and Clepa.

Manufacturers and suppliers do not explicitly call for a postponement of the ban on the sale of gasoline vehicles in 2035. However, they request that the standards be revised to include hybrid cars, range-extended models (a gasoline engine that recharges a battery), “highly efficient” gasoline engines, as well as synthetic fuels, which are still under development.
