As Israel’s attacks on Iran continued into their fifth day June 17, the United States — and President Donald Trump — faced a potentially momentous decision. Should the U.S. actively participate in Israeli efforts to bomb Iran’s second-largest nuclear complex? Over the first five days of Israel’s campaign, Iran experienced major losses — in leadership, military assets and nuclear facilities. Analysts said the attacks left the nation’s Islamic government at its weakest point in decades. Israel’s earlier attacks had already weakened Iran’s proxies Hamas, in Gaza, and Hezbollah, in Lebanon. But a key goal of Israel’s attacks is to eliminate,…
Goldman Sachs has reduced the probability of recession in the next 12 months to 30%, from 35%, and earlier 45% (Reuters). It’s important to note that these projections are conditional on the path of future policies — which in these times are less clear than ever. Here’s my math. The current quota set for ICE deportations/removals is 3000/day. If that pace is achieved (which will almost assuredly scoop up more than just criminals), then after one year, about 1.1 million individuals will be removed. McKibben, Hogan and Noland (2024) provided simulation estimates for 1.3 million removed. One interesting aside is…

Caitlin Clark’s return to game action for the Indiana Fever against the New York Liberty following a quad injury averaged 2.2 million viewers on ABC, making it the third-most-watched WNBA game ever on the network. The game drew 76 percent more viewers than the average WNBA game on ABC last year. The WNBA had a decrease in ratings as Clark was out for five games with her injury. Clark’s previous games on network television have drawn 2.2 million viewers on CBS against the Liberty in May, as well as 2.7 million on ABC against the Chicago Sky.
A dangerous heat dome will build over the northern US, with temperatures feeling like 100 degrees.WASHINGTON – After what has largely been a cool start to meteorological summer in the northern U.S., temperatures are expected to swing in the opposite direction shortly after astronomical summer arrives.According to the FOX Forecast Center, a stout ridge of high pressure will move eastward across a large swath of the country, bringing sweltering heat to major cities such as Chicago, Detroit, and the major urban centers along the Interstate 95 corridor.”In the summer, when you see these big ridges, that’s a strong indication that…
The messages coming out of the Trump administration in the first hours after Israel launched its attack against Iran on Thursday evening were mixed. An initial statement from Secretary of State Marco Rubio was unequivocal: “We are not involved in strikes against Iran.” Israel was acting alone. A statement from President Donald Trump early the next day, though, seemed to align more with Israel’s attack—and used the threat of worse violence to press the Iranian government to make a deal on its nuclear program, for which further talks, now canceled, had been planned for this past weekend. The messages coming…
