We at the Cultural Trust are deeply dismayed by the federal government’s recent cuts to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Those cuts will dramatically reduce vital programs and services for Oregonians provided by Oregon Humanities, the State Library of Oregon and the many museums across the state that receive funding directly from IMLS. We stand with our colleagues at those institutions in calling for the cuts to be reversed to minimize the harm done to our libraries, museums and humanities programs. The leadership of the Oregon Arts Commission and the Oregon Cultural Trust have been exploring the concept of joint governance and semi-independent status for several years, beginning with a feasibility study in 2018. After additional studies, research and a facilitated working group process, the boards of both agencies – with support from the Governor’s Office and leadership of the Oregon Business Development Department (Business Oregon) – voted unanimously to support the concept and to move forward with bill drafting.
