At Summer Davos, Chinese Premier Li Qiang dismissed Western claims that China is flooding the world with excess supply, quipping that China isn’t “stupid enough” to subsidize exports. That may be true—but even smart Chinese economic advisors are scratching their heads at just what the country’s intentions are. The Chinese leadership is fighting a battle against overcapacity, but as part of a domestic reckoning, not out of pressure over trade. China is a massive country, and for all the party’s rhetoric, sometimes a surprisingly disunified one, especially economically. On July 30, a day after Chinese negotiators concluded their talks with…
trillions of dollars that appear to be economic growth are just borrowing from the future — a debt that will eventually have to be repaid with taxes or inflation. Both will kill growth. Consumers are in the same boat. Families have depleted their savings and gone deeply into debt to meet today’s stratospheric cost of living. Credit card debt alone is a record $1.14 trillion. Total household debt has ballooned to an eye-watering $17.8 trillion. However, the debt charade is ending, and the façade of economic growth will come down soon after that. The latest consumer credit data shows that…
Chicago Fire’s 3-2 win over St. Louis City in MLS wasn’t just memorable for the action on the pitch – but for one young supporter who completely stole the show.During the match at SeatGeek Stadium, the youngster made a surprise dash from the stands onto the pitch, dressed head-to-toe in football kit. From there, she hilariously tied two security guards in knots – running circles around them as they struggled to keep up. At one point, she even half-dodged a player while sprinting toward the penalty area.Eventually, running out of steam, she turned back towards the stands, only for her moment…

Ukraine has been living for the fourth consecutive year under extraordinary wartime conditions characterised by profound uncertainty and persistent risks. More than half of the state budget is allocated to war-related needswhile other expenditures remain de facto “frozen” at pre-war levels or are underfunded. In practice, all domestic budgetary resources are directed towards sustaining the armed forces, whereas international assistance covers social protection and other expenditures. Nevertheless, even under these constraints, Ukraine spends only half as much on the war effort as Russia. Without international support, Ukraine would be unable either to sustain its defence effort or to meet the…
