Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem touted the results of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, saying more than 1 million immigrants in the U.S. illegally chose to leave the country. “According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, we have 1.6 million illegal aliens that have gone home voluntarily,” Noem told reporters during an Aug. 19 visit to the U.S. southern border. “They have left the United States, returned to their countries at the encouragement of President (Donald) Trump and his policies so that they have an opportunity to come back to America the right way.” Mention repeated the statistic at…

Why are some people cruel? Why are some governments cruel? Do cruel governments require cruel citizens? I take cruelty to refer to Merriam-Webster’s definition of cruel as “disposed to inflict pain or suffering: devoid of humane feeling.” An individual is cruel who has a taste for cruelty, i.e. cruelty is an argument of his utility function. He will satisfy this preference when he can do it at a price that he considers acceptable. This is the standard price theory model, which remains useful despite all its critiques: the individual maximizes his utility given his preferences and the constraints he faces.…

AS Roma and adidas have unveiled the club’s 2025/26 away kit – and it’s one of their boldest designs yet.Inspired by the mythology of Ancient Rome, the shirt comes in a striking orange base, complete with a lightning bolt motif running across the front. The symbol is tied to Mars, the legendary god of war and thunder, giving the design a nod to the city’s millennia-old history. The detailing is kept sharp and clean, with black accents across adidas’ trademark three stripes on the shoulders and logo. Adding to the retro feel, Roma’s classic crest from 1988-1996 makes another return –…

For almost four decades, Jamaica has ranked among the countries with the highest homicide rates in the world. But since 2022, thanks to concerted government efforts, its murder rate has been falling: first by nearly 8 percent from 2022 to 2023, followed by an 18.7 percent decline from 2023 to 2024. In the first seven months of this year, the island has registered an unprecedented 43 percent drop in homicides compared to 2024. If the trend holds, Jamaica’s murder rate for this year could fall below 25 per 100,000 people. That is still high, but it’s a level that the…

I was thinking about how a completely subservient central bank can destroy price stability, referring to examples from history. From Phillip Cagan’s U.Chicago dissertation: Source: CAGAN (1954). Note: Drawn on a log scale. According to Cagan’s calculations (Table 10), as of August 1920, m/m inflation (annualized) was 30.7% (using log differences). By August 1921, it was 153%; by August 1922, it was 337%. In other words, one can get rapidly accelerating inflation if monetary policy is completely untethered in a situation where there are massive budget deficits, and the central bank is acting completely at the discretion…

Micah Parsons’ agent remains mystified as to why his client is no longer a Dallas Cowboy and says the edge rusher always wanted to remain with the team. Parsons was last week traded to the Green Bay Packers after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones refused to discuss a contract extension with agent David Mulugheta after believing he had already reached a verbal agreement with the player himself. Instead the 26-year-old was traded to the Packers in exchange for three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark and first-round picks in 2026 and 2027. Parsons set for payday in Green Bay Mulugheta negotiated…

The Brooklyn Nets have been active this summer in taking on contracts, while adding future assets for doing so. With over $16 million remaining in cap space, the Nets may not be done either. Sean Marks has already brought in Michael Porter Jr., Terance Mann and Haywood Highsmith this offseason in salary-clearing trades. Those three deals netted Brooklyn two first-round picks (one was used to draft Drake Powell in 2025) and a future second-round pick. The Nets have contracts lined up to re-sign Day’Ron Sharpe and Ziaire Williams, and to add Ricky Council IV, which makes roster spots an issue…
