Even as U.S. President Donald Trump attempts to end wars in Europe and the Middle East, he is sending the United States careening into a new conflict in…
Occasionally, I use a grocery delivery service—not always, and not for every item. In a vacuum, one might think that having someone else take the time to gather grocery items for me and bring those items to my house seems clearly advantageous. So why don’t I always use this service? A few ideas from economics help explain why. For one, it’s not always the case that the time spent grocery shopping is purely a cost. While I know this isn’t true of everyone, I actually rather enjoy grocery shopping. Walking up and down the aisles of the store, chatting with…
Lionel Messi made it a goalscoring farewell as he played what appears likely to be his final Argentina match in his homeland in a 3-0 win over Venezuela, but again refused to say whether he will help them defend the World Cup at the 2026 finals. Messi was on target twice for Argentina in his 194th cap for his country, with his goals sandwiched by a 76th minute effort from Lautaro Martinez. The man many consider the greatest of all time is unlikely to play for Argentina beyond their title defence next year, and was tearful as he made his…

The yield curve at the short end is almost as inverted as it was in November 2024. In fact, it’s more inverted than on January 21st, 2025, the day after Trump’s inauguration. Yet, at the long end of the spectrum, 30 year yields are back up to January 21st levels. Figure 1: Yields on 11/5 (dark blue), on 1/21/2025 (orange), 4/1/2025 (green), 9/4/2025 (light blue), in %. The downward movement since January over the 1mo to 3 yr portion of the spectrum indicates that future rates are likely to be lower than imagined at the beginning of…
