I’ve spent the past several days telling incredulous reporters that Israel’s bombing campaign against Iran, even with help from the United States, looked anemic—and that it would, at best, set Iran’s nuclear program back by several months, maybe a year if we were lucky. Now CNNthe New York Times, Reutersand even a sweating Fox News are reporting on the conclusions of a five-page classified assessment of the strikes that was prepared by the United States’ Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). It turns out that I may have been overestimating the effectiveness of the bombing campaign. That report indicated that the strike…
My winter read this year was Natsume Sōseki’s 1906 satirical novel I am a Cat (original title: Wagahai wa Neko de Aru). The novel is told from the perspective of an unnamed cat and contains vignettes of its observations of its master Mr Sneaze (Sōseki’s conception of himself), Mrs Sneaze (his wife), and several of Mr Sneaze’s companions: Waverhouse, Coldmoon, Beauchamp, and Singleman in Meiji Era Japan. This post is not meant to be an in-depth analysis of the themes of the novel; this is neither the time nor place for it. Rather, I wish to highlight some elements I…
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who turned 40 earlier this year, will earn a basic salary of around £488,000 per day. This works out to £178 million each year. He also got a £24.5 million signing bonus, which could rise to £38 million if he stays for the second year of the deal. Perhaps most striking, Ronaldo now holds a 15 per cent ownership stake in Al-Nassr, valued at about £33 million. This makes him not just a player but also a part-owner, blurring the lines between athlete and executive. Ronaldo has spoken before about his wish to own football…
Portland Trail Blazers GM Joe Cronin believes that rookie center Yang Hansen has unlimited potential (drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies 16th overall and traded to Portland). (via Portland Trail Blazers): “His ceiling is very high. It’s extremely difficult to find a young player of that stature with this skillset, and it’s translatable stuff that we’ve […] The post Joe Cronin: I wouldn’t put a ceiling on Yang Hansen appeared first on TalkBasket.net.
An area to watch with a low potential for tropical development is forecast to move across the northwestern Caribbean and southern Bay of Campeche in the coming days.A pair of disturbances over and near the western Caribbean could trigger a tropical depression to develop in the extreme southern Gulf in two or three days. One disturbance is already over Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, and right on its heels another robust disturbance is approaching Belize. The curve of the coastline in the extreme southern Gulf, known as the Bay of Campeche, is known to help systems develop spin. There’s no sign at this…
In September of 2020, the Almeda Fire hit the town of Talent, Oregon. Spreading widely and rapidly, the fire destroyed homes, businesses, and many forms of wild and plant life. In total the fire destroyed 2,600 homes between Ashland, Talent, Phoenix and Medford. It was the most destructive wildfire in Oregon’s recorded history. More than 3,000 people were displaced during this tragedy, including residents of several mobile home parks, some of the area’s most vulnerable residents. The Talent Historical Society recently launched a new digital feature called “Talent: Town in Flames” that pursues the important mission of sharing the stories of the communities working…

A heated political row erupted this week in Brussels, pitting groupings within the European Parliament’s centrist coalition against one another, after the European Commission threatened to withdraw new legislation targeting greenwashing. It marks another setback for the European Green Deal, following a shift to the right in last year’s European elections. What happened in the last week? The Green Claims Directive, which is proposing new rules requiring businesses to independently verify the environmental credentials of their products, is at the centre of…

Tottenham Hotspur are basking in their Europa League triumph – and they’ve chosen to celebrate it with a brilliant, not-so subtle dig at Manchester United. As part of their new Europa League Winners clothing line, Spurs have reclaimed one of football’s most iconic jibes: “Lads, it’s Tottenham.”The phrase, famously attributed to former United manager Sir Alex Fergusonwas reportedly said in the dressing room to motivate his team before matches against Spurs. It became shorthand for Tottenham’s perceived fragility during a 17-year trophy drought – until now. After defeating Manchester United four times last season, including in the Europa League final, Spurs…
Every basketball game is likely to have some fouls called during it, regardless of the skill level of the teams playing.
