The fall of Syria’s Assad dynasty last December brought a glimmer of hope to a country mired in a 13-year-long civil war. Indeed, “Syria’s current transition to a new form of government is in a category of its own,” Zaid Al-Ali wrote in April. “Desperate to avoid the mistakes that their counterparts in other Arab countries have made in recent decades, the new interim authorities under President Ahmed al-Sharaa have achieved impressive progress.” Yet despite fragile public confidence in its transitional government, Syria faces profound threats as it seeks to rebuild, from the resurgence of the Islamic State to the…
by Billy Binion, Reason, June 5, 2025. Excerpt: The gist is simple. That issue focused “on what appears to many to be an existential threat to democracy,” the magazine wrotewhich is “the far-right shift of the Supreme Court, and the conservative movement’s plans to commandeer it.” That critique has persisted for some time now. Some decisions today from the Court help show, once again, why it is neither fair nor accurate. First up was Ames v. Ohio Department of Youth Services, in which the justices reversed a lower court decision and sided with a woman who said she was the…
Many documentarians create a film to increase awareness and understanding of a pressing issue or story by spotlighting, investigating, or humanizing what is happening, in hopes that their films will make a difference. At the core of impact work is a collection of best practices that take into account how a film will be used as a tool for social change once it is complete. Story Money Impact (SMI) would like to offer impact coaching hours to three Canadian documentary films (20–90 mins in length) by underrepresented creators that are in the beginning development phases of their projects. Impact Mentorship Program…
Given the wages of today’s footballers, it’s fair to assume many wouldn’t know how to change a car tire. Break down on the motorway? Most would probably just call roadside assistance. But thanks to Chelsea’s partnership with official tire sponsor Linglong Tire, that theory was put to the test – with hilarious results. In a light-hearted video challenge, Chelsea stars Tosin Adarabioyo, Noni Madueke, and Pedro Neto – dressed head-to-toe in royal blue mechanic jumpsuits – were tasked with changing a hatchback tire, completely unassisted.First up was Adarabioyo, who handled the challenge surprisingly well, completing the swap in just over two minutes. Then…

Liz Oyer, a longtime Justice Department attorney handling pardons, was fired by the Trump administration in March. Since then, Oyer has publicly criticized the administration, including its approach to pardons. In an April 30 TitlokOyer took issue with many of Trump’s pardons, not only because they short-circuited the justice system but also because of their financial impact. “President Trump has granted pardons that have wiped out over $1 billion in debts owed by wealthy Americans who have committed fraud and broken the law,” said Oyer, who said she was fired because she opposed a pardon to restore gun rights to…
Remember, we’ve got tariff *pauses* (pl.), OBBB, debt ceiling limit, etc. Do you expect the folks in the present administration to have a handle on things?
