Flanked by San Antonio Spurs royalty, Spurs guard Stephon Castle was named Rookie of the Year. At his celebratory press conference, San Antonio’s previous Rookie of the Year winners: all-time greats David Robinson and Tim Duncan and a future face of the league Victor Wembanyama, all appeared on stage to hand Castle the trophy and welcome the UConn product into elite company. Castle’s victory marked the first time since 2016 an NBA team had back-to-back Rookie of the Year winners after Wembanyama took home the award last season. The last team to do so was the Minnesota Timberwolves, when Andrew…

Salem, Ore. – Donations to the Oregon Cultural Trust surpassed $5.7 million in fiscal year 2022, an 11.7 percent increase over fiscal year 2021. The amount also surpasses previously announced 2021 calendar year results of $5.55 million, important as fiscal year results determine the funds available for grant awards to cultural organizations across the state. “We sent out a spring appeal reminding donors that donations made prior to June 30 increase our pool of funding available for grant awards, and they responded generously,” said Cultural Trust Executive Director Brian Rogers. “It’s clear that cultural donors recognize that the more than…
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., said tech giant Meta would be a big winner if Congress passes President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill.” The U.S. House approved the Trump-backed tax and spending plan May 22. The Senate is expected to vote soon on the bill, which Trump says he wants on his desk by July 4. “If every one of the 340 million people in America paid a new $35 copay to visit the doctor, that still wouldn’t be enough to cover how much Meta would get from just one tax break in Donald Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill,’” Warren wrote…

The Detroit Pistons were preparing to create enough cap space this summer to make an offer for big man Naz Reid. However, Reid has agreed to a five-year, $125 million contract to stay with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Pistons may consider making a run at Memphis Grizzlies restricted free agent big man Santi Aldama. Detroit would like to add a stretch big to their frontcourt group. Wolves guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker could also be a target for the Pistons this summer. Detroit is considered likely to re-sign Malik Beasley on a multi-year deal. Re-signing Beasley has been the priority for the…

In the days before the surprise U.S. attack on Iran, Politico reported that one man in the Defense Department was having an outsized say on Washington’s Iran strategy: Erik Kurilla, the hawkish U.S. Central Command leader known as “The Gorilla.” “He’s a big dude, he’s jacked, he’s exactly this ‘lethality’ look they’re going for,” said an anonymous former official. So long as military advisors “come across as tough and warfighters,” the source added, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth “is easily persuaded to their point of view.” Kurilla’s influence illustrates a broader truth about Washington’s current priorities: In President Donald Trump’s second…
