My nowcast of BLS private nonfarm payroll employment was for a decreaes of 78K, but with a very wide prediction interval. This is an aggregate number; however, we can infer certain trends from the disaggregate (by firm size) numbers from ADP. The financial accelerator approach (e.g., BBG, 1996)implies that smaller firms (with less collateral) will evidence a slowdown sooner than larger firms. Using the 500 employee cutoff, can we see the differential trends in the data? Figure 1: Change in employment from May 2025 in firms with less than 500 employees (blue), in firms with 500 and more employees (tan),…
Play was brought to a standstill during Austria’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against Cyprus after a sinkhole suddenly appeared on the pitch late in the second half. The bizarre incident occurred around the 75th minute, when Danish referee Jakob Kehlet halted the match after noticing the gaping hole near Austria keeper Alexander Schlager’s box at the Raiffeisen Arena, in Linz. The opening was wide enough to swallow an entire football, prompting ground staff to rush on with buckets of sand in a frantic attempt to patch it up.After more than seven minutes of repairs, Kehlet finally gave the green light to…
Tajh Ariza announced his commitment to Oregon on Friday. Ariza, the son of former NBA player Trevor Ariza, is ranked as the No. 24 prospect in the SC Next 100 for the 2026 class. “The visit was great,” Ariza said. “Coach [Dana] Altman is a basketball guy, but he really connected with me and my family. He sees me not only as a basketball player but as a person. He is a straightforward guy.” Ariza is Oregon’s second commitment for the 2026 class following Kendre Harrison. Oregon remains in the running for overall No. 1 recruit Tyran Stokes.
Brussels – The increase of quotas for certain agricultural and food commodities from Ukraine to the EU, as well as the impacts of the EU’s trade agreement with the Mercosur countries, were among the topics of Thursday’s (October 2) discussions between the Minister of Agriculture of the Slovak Republic, Richard Takáč (Smer-SD), and the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Christoph Hansen, reports the Brussels correspondent of TASR. Richard Takáč reminded that the discussions had a broader scope. They focused on the budget for agriculture within the future seven-year EU budget after 2027 and the creation of a new common agricultural policy,…
The Centre for Economic Strategy cites data from the Institute of Demography showing that about 700,000 men aged 18 to 22 live in Ukraine. Most of them are students, so only 200,000 to 300,000 from this group are part of the labour market, even taking into account those who combine studying with work. Hlib Vyshlinsky, Executive Director of CES, notes that when compared to the total economically active population — about 13 million people — young men make up only 2–3%. «Even if they leave en masse, there will be no significant blow to the economy. The main risk is…
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is “one of the best managers in world football”, Jamie Redknapp has said after the Spaniard guided the Cherries to second in the Premier League with victory over Fulham. In his second season in England, Iraola is the fourth-favourite with bookmakers to become the next Manchester United manager following his side’s 3-1 home win over Fulham on Friday, when two goals and an assist from Antoine Semenyo helped them recover from falling behind in the 70th minute. “He’s incredible,” former England midfielder Redknapp told Sky Sports. “What an asset to the club. He could manage any…

President Donald Trump announced that H-1B visa fees would increase to $100,000, a move that some social media users said could worsen U.S. physician shortages. As of Sept. 21, new H-1B visa applications will require a $100,000 fee, up from $2,000 to $5,000. The Trump administration said the fee is to prevent American workers from “being replaced with lower-paid foreign labor.” The H-1B visa program lets employers temporarily hire foreign workers in specialty fields. Several medical associations sent a Sept. 25 letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, asking for physicians and other medical personnel to be exempted from the…
