Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico claims that in a phone call with Antonio Costa, he spoke about how the EU is too focused on Ukraine and not on the economic crisis.

Bratislava – The Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Robert Fico (Smer-SD), is increasingly convinced that the ongoing discussion about Ukraine is masking the EU’s inability to address its most fundamental challenges and problems. According to TASR, this was reported on Wednesday by the press and information department of the Office of the Government of the Slovak Republic.

“In preparation for the European Council, I had a long phone call with the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa. I expressed my astonishment that we are again going to prioritize Ukraine as a topic, rather than the enormous economic and political problems of the EU,” said Robert Fico.

He claims that he repeatedly reminded Antonio Costa that he is not interested in dealing with sanction packages against Russia until he sees political guidelines for the European Commission in the conclusions of the EU summit on how to deal with the crisis in the automotive industry and high energy prices, which are making the European economy absolutely uncompetitive.

“I refuse to have such serious topics ‘resolved’ in the conclusions of the European Council with general phrases, while detailed decisions and positions are devoted to aid for Ukraine and support for the war. I informed Antonio Costa that we will present significantly more concrete proposals on the automotive industry and energy prices on behalf of the Government of the Slovak Republic than those we can see today in the draft conclusions,” Fico added.
