Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has been killed in a car crash in Spain.

The Portugal international, who was 28, was in a Lamborghini that came off the road in the north-western province of Zamora overnight.

He was travelling with his brother Andre Silva, a 25-year-old Penafiel player who was also killed.

Zamora News reported the emergency services were called at 1240am local time after being alerted to an accident on the motorway heading in the direction of Benavente.

The fire service extinguished the fire but the medical crew were unable to save the two occupants of the car.

Tyre blowout to blame for crash

A statement from the Civil Guard, given to the BBC, read: “The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking.

“It was in the early hours, 1230, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora.

“The car caught fire and the two occupants were killed.”

    Liverpool devastated by Jota’s passing

A Liverpool statement read: “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

“The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

“We will continue to provide them with our full support.

    Jota was recently married

Jota got married two weeks ago to long-term partner Rute Cardoso. They have three children.

In a joint post on Instagram following the ceremony, they wrote: “June 22, 2025. Yes to forever.”

Liverpool signed Jota from Wolves in 2020 and he immediately became a key member of the squad, helping the Merseysiders to the FA Cup title in 2022. They also finished runners-up in the EFL Cup and Champions League that season.

Following the departure of Jurgen Klopp and arrival of Arne Slot as manager, Liverpool won the Premier League title last season with Jota contributing nine goals in 37 appearances.

Jota started out at Pacos de Ferreira where his form earned him a move to Atletico Madrid. He struggled to make an impression in the Spanish capital and was loaned back to Porto in his homeland, and then on to Wolves in 2017.

His move to Molineux was made permanent in January 2018, midway through a season in which he scored 17 league goals to help Wolves to promotion to the Premier League.

At international level, Jota scored 14 goals in 49 appearances, helping them to the Nations League title in 2019 and again last month. Jota came off the bench as an extra-time substitute as Portugal beat Spain on penalties in the final.
