Community members participate in a Japanese percussion workshop at the Corvallis Multicultural Literacy Center

Corvallis Multicultural Literacy Center fosters belonging among immigrant, refugee and international communities, thanks in part to support from the Oregon Cultural Trust.

Pay-what-you-will English language classes are at the heart of the center’s programming, but a cornucopia of workshops and heritage celebrations is also offered. The curriculum is wide-ranging: one could take a class in suminagashi — the traditional Japanese art of ink marbling – on one day, then learn the secrets of Mexican salsa preparation or Egyptian hieroglyphics on another. The center also offers immigration and citizenship resources.

Cassady Gilroy, CMLC’s new executive director, believes that making arts and culture activities both accessible and affordable is an important part of community building.

“We represent several cultures from around the world,” says Gilroy. An Oregon Cultural Trust grant “ensures that arts, heritage and community engagement become accessible pathways to belonging and connection.”
