The European Union has “serious doubts” about the “Peace Council” launched by Donald Trump, particularly regarding its compatibility with the United Nations, said the President of the European Council Antonio Costa early on Friday.
Brussels – “We have serious doubts about a number of elements of the Peace Council’s charter regarding its scope of action, its governance and its compatibility with the United Nations Charter,” said Mr. Costa at the end of a summit of the Twenty-Seven in Brussels.
The head of the Spanish government Pedro Sanchez meanwhile told the press that his country had “declined” the invitation it had received to participate in this Peace Council.
France has also refused to be part of this body, Paris judging it incompatible with its commitment to the UN, while London did not want to attend the charter signing ceremony because of the presence within it, announced by Mr. Trump, of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The American president inaugurated his new “Peace Council” on Thursday in Davos, in the presence of around twenty leaders of countries that have joined this body placed under his control. (23 January 2026)
