On the night from Thursday to Friday, the Russian army carried out a massive attack using missiles and drones on the territory of Ukraine, including Kyiv and the Lviv region.

Reports of Russia’s use of the Oreshnik missile indicate a clear escalation of actions against Ukraine and, in Moscow’s intention, are meant to be a warning to Europe and the United States, wrote the head of EU diplomacy Kaja Kalla on X on Friday.

Kallas noted that the Russian leader Vladimir Putin does not want peace, and that Russia responds to diplomatic efforts with more missiles and destruction. “This deadly pattern of repeated serious Russian attacks will continue until we help Ukraine break it,” Kallas wrote on X.

As she added, in this situation the countries of the European Union must dig even deeper into their air defense stocks and deliver them to Kyiv now. “We must also further increase the cost of this war for Moscow, including by tightening sanctions,” she assessed.

European Commission spokeswoman Anitta Hipper added at a press briefing in Brussels on Friday that the EU fully supports Ukraine both during the war and on the path to a peace agreement, the proof of which – she emphasized – is the recent meeting of the coalition of the willing in Paris.

On the night from Thursday to Friday, the Russian army carried out a massive attack using missiles and drones on the territory of Ukraine, including Kyiv and the Lviv region. The Russian Ministry of Defense claims that a medium-range Oreshnik ballistic missile was used in the attack on Ukraine and that it was supposed to be a response to an alleged Ukrainian attack on Putin’s residence.

Oreshnik is a Russian medium-range missile system. The missile travels at a speed of about 10–12 thousand km/h and has a range of up to 5.5 thousand km.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia attacked Ukraine with 36 missiles, including one medium-range ballistic missile launched from the Kapustin Yar test site, and 242 drones. (01/09/2026)
