The European Union on Saturday called for respect for international law in Venezuela and reiterated its commitment to a democratic and peaceful transition, after an attack by the United States against this South American country and the announcement of the capture of its president Nicolas Maduro.

Brussels – The head of EU diplomacy Kaja Kallas said on X that she had called for “restraint” during a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the operation in Venezuela.

“The EU has repeatedly stated that Mr. Maduro lacks legitimacy and has advocated for a peaceful transition” in Venezuela, Kaja Kallas argued, reporting on her exchange with Marco Rubio.

But, she added, “under all circumstances, the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter must be respected. We call for restraint.”

The same tone from Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

“We stand in solidarity with the Venezuelan people and support a peaceful and democratic transition. Any solution must respect international law and the United Nations Charter,” she reacted on X.

For his part, Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, the body that represents the 27 member countries, said he was following the situation with “great concern.” He called for “de-escalation.” (January 3, 2026)
